GAJOOB ISSUE #9 - SAMPLER #4 (1993)

 

Finally here's the last of the sampler tapes from Gajoob Issue # 9. I hadn't listened to this tape in a long time, and forgot all about Chris Wind, so at long last, here you go! The tape this song came off of was titled "For Amelia" and was released in 1991.

 

Chris Wind aka Peg Tittle, had three cassettes reviewed in this issue of Gajoob, and she is obviously a woman with many different styles. "For Amelia" is not like anything else I quite remember from those days, and is quite beautiful compared to everything else on this sampler.

It's looks like the Canadian Wind quit blowing in about 1995, but she does have a website you can visit to find out more about her, and her work.

What can be said about the Screamin' Popeyes that hasn't been said before?

 Not much!! That's all I can say!

 

The Screamin' Popeyes hailed from Branson, Missouri, and this tape sounds like a cross between The Mothers of Invention, and The Firesign Theatre, and that's not easy, but it is the Screamin' Popeyes!

The copy I got of "DiMuro House" was an economy package, and included another bonus tape on side B called "Snoutburger." What a cool twofer deal!

Dino DiMuro is an extremely talented cat, and his music is like an easy-peel package you can't get open, so you just rip it to shreds, and try and figure it out later.

 

Here's a great piece that will hopefully explain it all, but then again, maybe not!

SLIM THE DRIFTER - "Always (I Wish You Well)" (1992)

 

Slim The Drifter was not only a talented singer and songwriter, but he was also a friend of ours, and one of the few artists besides Hermano Guzanos who was on our Guzbro label. This collage was Slim's page from our 1992 catalogue.

I don't how many of these1992 four-song tapes Slim made, but I would guess it was probably only a handful, and this is just stripped down, bare bones Slim, singing and playing his acoustic guitar, just the way he liked it. The song presented here is going to surprise a lot of people with it's depth and plaintive mournful delivery. So here you go................

While I'm on the subject of Don Campau, here's some music from another one of his "No Pigeonholes" radio shows that were broadcast on KKUP in Cupertino, Calif.

This show aired on May 12, 1990, and like all of Don's shows, had an incredible variety of music.

 

Since 2011, "No Pigeonholes" has been on the air on KOWS, which is in Occidental, California. KOWS is the same channel that Lord Litter's "Magic Music Box" has aired on for the last couple of years.

Don's shows air on the 1st, 3rd, and fifth Thursday nights at 6:00 PM, and Lord Litter's show is on Sunday nights at 8:00 PM.

Don usually even sent out a full list of the participants, but I don't seem to have one for this tape, so all I can tell you is that this is the ultimate surf dirge by a band that I can't find out anything on. If Don has any useful info, I'm sure he'll gladly pass it on, and I'll update this thing.

On the broadcast, he says the name of this group is Load, but maybe it's Lode. He asks Jennifer who is in the studio with him, and she says they are from Tustin, Calif. but the lead singer had moved to Kauai, so your guess is as good as mine!
