Screamin' Popeyes - "POP - ICON" (Early 90's)

There once was a great band from Hollister, Missouri named Screamin' Popeyes! They sent me a lot of tapes, and they were all so good, I can only assume they went on to be The Black Stripes or The White Keys or one of those current cool bands! Here's two great songs in two different styles from their release called "POP-ICON! The second song reminds me a lot of the song styling of Walter Becker of Steely Dan fame!

THE SATELLITES OF LOVE - "Quite Happy" (1988)

I really wish there was some way I could generate more interest in this site, because some of the music that was produced on cassette in the 80's and 90's was really good, and the German band Satellites Of Love featuring Micha, Bogdan, Rubin, and Bheila is a good example! Here's two songs from their 1988 release "Quite Happy!" It might just make you quite happy!!

THE RUDY SCHWARTZ PROJECT - "Bowling For Appliances" (1987)

Nothing's safe on this 1987 "Ratscum" release titled "Bowling For Appliances" out of Austin, Texas! The cover art was done by the great underground artiste Roy Tompkins, who has also done some collaborations with Guzanos guitarist Gary Wray!

TAPE REBEL 8 - Deadly Serious - "Night With Kim Gordon" (1989)

One thing I liked about the whole cassette scene was all the various artists compilation tapes. This was a real good one  from Germany called "Tape Rebel 8!" This was a release on Winfried Pickart's Weed Music label from 1989. The artists involved were D' Innsect, The Bozfor, Sacks & Violins, Nostalgie Eternelle, Due, Forrest 4, and The Crew, but my favourite song off of this tape was:

Deadly Serious - "Night With Kim Gordon!"

KEVYN DYMOND & MARK SHAFER - Play Something Else (1988)

You can see by the list of people involved in this tape how much time must have gone into some of these projects!  This was a masterful release by Kevyn Dymond & Mark Shafer and included this little ditty called "Alien Mother" on it! Kevyn on guitar, Richard Engel on bass, Dan Seeling on drums, and one of my favorite vocalists ever, Mike Patton, screaming his tonsils out! I got lucky and Kevyn allowed me to also use this cut on a compilation tape I made called "Refried Dreams!"

ST 37 - "Voice In The Closet" (1989)

ST 37 was a quirky band straight out of Austin, Texas! Here's a cut "from space w/love," a 1989 release called "Voice In The Closet!" I would assume this band is as loved as The 13th Floor Elevators in Texas! If not, they should be!

Sometimes people were real helpful, and would send me things like this informative 'Test Chart" I got from ST 37!
Try it yourself to see!

RAY CARMEN - "More Than Enough" (1991)

I've traded a lot of tapes with Ray Carmen over the years! Ray is a Pop genius from Ohio, and a real nice guy all at the same time! That's more than enough in my book! Here's a cut from his 1991 cassette titled "re: mix ep"

HANGIN' OUT WITH BONNINGTON TRUCE!

Hangin' Out With Bonnington Truce
Well, I wish I hadn't destroyed the other blog, my memory was better back then! Whatever, one of my favorite tapes I ever got came from Gulfport, Mississippi in the late 1980's! The band was called Bonnington Truce, and was Patrick Wallace on vocals and guitar, Earl Lundy on vocals and keyboards, Ben Young on vocals and guitar, Jeff Bridges on bass, and Hugh O'Neill on drums! Here's a couple of reasons to love them:

Bonnington Truce - Find The Way

Patrick Wallace can also sound spot on like John Lennon when he wants to, check it out!

Bonnington Truce - By My Windows      Sounds like a lost Beatles' song!

Bonnington Truce - Instant Karma

DON'T BE STUPID - Baghead Records (1987)

"Conformity Is Deformity!!!"
Being included on a various artists compilation album seemed like a good way to get more people to hear our music, so in 1987, I sent a copy of "The Worm's Turn" to Baghead Records and they used  3 songs on this comp tape called "Don't Be Stupid!"  Mostly us and a bunch of punk bands, our songs stood out like three sore thumbs!

Here's an uplifting little number from that tape by the band DECLINE - "Nuclear Death"
