HOWL IN THE TYPEWRITER - "A Pumf Twofer" (2022)

 

Pumf Records has just announced the release of two new CD's by the house band Howl In The Typewriter. This first one is being referred to as "The Red Album" and was intended to be released in 2020. Something happened, and the whole project got sidetracked until now. 

 

Described by the label as a 17-track, 66-minute extravaganza of mutant pop songs, soundscapes, noise, loopbeats, electronics and abstract gibberish," there's a little something here for everyone! On this track, pStan Batcow does a fine job of channeling his inner Wesley Willis in a story about the fantastic magician Harry Houdini.

The second new release by Howl In The Typewriter was done just this year and is titled "The Sound Of Musick." pStan describes it as "a stream-of-conciousness journey through songs, beats, abstract sound, spoken commentary, radioplay, and other-world creation through the use of soundbites."

 

From what I heard, I'd say that's a pretty apt description! I really like the first cut entitled "Go Apeshit." It really reminds me a lot of the music in the classic 1965 film "Frankenstein Meets The Space Monster."But to keep this cohesive, I chose a different tune, and you'll understand why after you listen to it!

MONSTERS UNDER THE BED - "Another Vinyl Monster From Optional Art" (1993)

 

This is a great 7" 45 single by Lance Morgan as/of Monsters Under The Bed. On it you'll find the song's "First One" and "When I Die". It was originally released on Rich Arithmetic's Optional Art label in 1993.

 

These two songs were later released on Lance's 1998 CD titled "Neighborhood Of Reality."

Monsters Under The Bed was Lance Morgan on Vocals, Guitars, Organ, Bass, & Cool Tunes, and Rich Arithmetic playing Lead/Rhythm Guitars, Organ, Bass, and is responsible for the Oohs, Ahhs, & Oh-Yeahs! Ruppi Barnickel is on the Drums.

 

Rich and Lance are still good friends to this day, still record together, and one of these days we'll be hearing more I'm sure.

Rich Arithmetic also has a cut called "Strange World" on a massive new various artist's compilation now available on Bandcamp called

Here's a great 45 I got from Al Perry by his band The Cattle called "Cattle Call." It was a three song EP with Al on Vocals and Guitar, Dave Roads playing bass, and Julia Mueller playing the drums.

There are three cool songs on this platter, "Cattle Call," "You're The Flake (That Takes The Cake)," and the classic......

As I did with many people, I sent an unsolicited copy of our first tape to When People Were Shorter And Lived Near The Water, and I received this cool 7" EP in return.

 

When looking at these guys picture, they appear to be a very normal group of guys, but don't be deceived, because their music is anything but normal, as you will soon hear!

THE SCRAP YARD - "Too Old" (1988)

 

This 7" 45 single was sent to me by my friend Guido Erfren in Germany. I think Guido was aiding in distribution. The guys in this trio called The Scrap Yard were Ralph Schmitter on Bass & Tambourine, Stefan Albrecht playing the Drums, and Georg Müller on Guitar and vocals. The songs were engineered by Rudi Islinger.

I'm getting a late start this month, but if you've been waiting around for the good stuff, then here you go! This is a seriously killer 45 from The Room 101.

The Room 101 were from Youngstown, Ohio, the hometown of Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini, and is composed of Mark Hanley on Guitars & Magitape, and Robert Shields playing drums and keyboards.

 

This 45 was released in 1987 and out of all of Mark's work, this is a real fave of mine, and you're about to find out why!

The music on this early tape of ours was never really intended to be heard by anyone except the three of us. We let loose this tape on the public in 1992, but the music was really recorded in 1987. 

This was work all week, get together on the weekend in Gary's garage, plug in, and go. Recording it was just an afterthought. It's unsophisticated and unrefined, and more fun than three grown men should be having. There was no leader, there were no rules, and frankly, that's what it sounds like.

There are some songs I like but most of them have some part I wish could have been edited out, so that's what I was able to do with this one. My verbal introduction always bugged me, so tonight, I cut it out, and here's the new version that I can finally say I actually like.
