CRASH-N-BURN - "Alcohol" Demo (1987)

What better way would there be to follow up Dr Danger than Crash-N-Burn? None, I daresay!

This 1987 incarnation of Crash-N-Burn included John Sanders on Guitar, Keyboards and Vocals, Dean Menta playing Guitar and Percussion, who went on to play guitar with Faith No More, and Sparks, Amy Sanders on Bass, and Parry Wolfe playing the Drums.

Crash-N-Burn were an incredibly high energy band, and here's an awesome demo written by John that's a three minute and thirty-two second reminder of something none of us should be doing, drinking and driving!

CRASH-N-BURN - Self-Titled (1988)

CRASH-N-BURN was one of my favorite bands of this era, and I wouldn't know how to describe them completely, but let's try Funky Punky Chunky Rock. They covered a lot of bases. The band members were John Sanders on keyboards and guitar, Amy Sanders on bass, Dean Menta on another guitar, and Parry Wolf on the drums.
Here's a song from the first self-titled tape John sent me! Turn it up!
 CRASH-N-BURN - "The Big Business"

John and I wrote back and forth a few times, and this is a flyer for a "One Dead Cow Show and Rodeo" gig that he wrote me a letter on. I've tried to find some current information on the band or it's members, because I just assumed they'd be pretty famous by now, but instead, I can't find anything, so I guess they must have really just Crashed N' Burned!

Anyway, I liked CRASH-N-BURN so much that I asked them to give me something for my "Refried Dreams" compilation tape, which they kindly obliged, and I got this extra cool sticker too. Check it out, it's another great song called "Last Night Stand."

CRASH~N~BURN - "HXAE~N~BTXN" (1988)

Still undefined by any musical genres in my opinion, Crash~N~Burn were musical trendsetters of a kind of music that still hasn't been thoroughly explored today. Their music was some kind of loosetightmanicfunkjampunkfusion rock, but I don't think that even describes it very good!  John offered to come to Bakersfield to do a gig, but I didn't have any way to set that up, and too bad, because I'll bet they were a blast to see live!

Crash~N~Burn were from San Francisco, and consisted of John Sanders - Right-Wing Guitar and Vocals, Amy Sanders - Bass and Vocals, Dean Menta - Left-Wing Guitar, and Parry Wolfe on Drums!
I don't know what happened to them, but I do know they rocked the late 80's.

These are some of the cool stickers John sent me, and here's a killer song from this demo tape!

CRASH-N-BURN - "Live" (1988)

After thirty years or so, I finally got back in touch with John Sanders of the punk-funk band Crash-N-Burn, and he was kind enough to send me some more music that the band recorded years ago! Man, this is some good stuff, and it was very difficult for me to make a choice, but I finally settled on this "Live" cut. The band at this point in time was comprised of John Sanders - Guitar, Keyboards, & Vocals, Amy Sanders - Bass & Vocals, Dean Menta - Guitar & Percussion, and Parry Wolfe - Drums.
Since then, John has moved back to Memphis, and next time I do this, I'll show you how things have changed, and play you some completely different music from some of his current projects!

CRASH-N-BURN - "Snake Eyes" (1987)

John Sanders has given me access to the whole Crash-N-Burn catalogue to share with you guys, so why wouldn't I do that? There ain't no reason, so here's yet another fantastic song the band recorded in 1987!
John Sanders - Guitar, Vocals, Keyboards
Amy Sanders - Bass, Vocals
Parry Wolfe - Drums
Dean Menta - Guitar
(For all you musicologists, the last few years, Dean Menta has been playing with the band Sparks)

JOHN SANDERS - "People's Park" (1996)

John Sanders has had a long and storied musical career, and it all started in 1977, in Commerce, Texas with a band named Ebofyte.
John Says "Ebofyte was actually named Eboflyte, someone messed up the poster but I thought Ebofyte made us sound more radical."
Besides John, some of the other folks in this photo are Lewyllen Blackburn, Drummer Nate Williams, sax player Kelvin, and guitar player Nate.

In the mid to late 80's John played guitar and keyboards, and sang, in the punk/funk Crash N Burn, in the San Francisco Bay area!
"The CnB poster was the work of guitar player Ray Houghton. Its a drawing of the Club Foote where we put on a lot of shows, love the typical 80s forlorn punk girl sitting in the doorway."

John was a very busy guy when he lived in Northern California, and from 1988 to 1990, he was playing keyboards in the dynamic soul group New Power Soul.
On into the 90's, he was in a jazz band called Memphis Mystics.
Then came the very cool band Stepping Razor up into the 2000's.

Since the early 2000's John has lived in Memphis, and spends most of his time playing in the fantastic jazz trio called Zazerac!
I've got music from most all those eras to share with you, but for now, let's get this party started with a very cool solo tune from about 1996, with John responsible for both the keyboards and the drum loops!

NEW POWER SOUL - "News" (1988)

 New Power Soul

New Power Soul was a 1988 to 1990 bay area funk band that was formed by John Sanders after Crash-N-Burn. They also performed in Northern California clubs during that time period.

The members included John Sanders on Keyboards, Amy Sanders playing the Bass, Rod Connor on Guitar and Vocals, Parry Wolfe playing the Drums, and Howard Raines and Eddie on Vocals. I've listened to a lot of funk in my life, and I can see or hear no reason why these guys never hit it big. All the elements are there and New Power Soul was just as good or better than many mainstream bands!

Since that time, the term New Power Soul was used extensively by Prince, or The New Power Generation as it were, and these days there's a wedding band in New Jersey by the same name.

John Sanders sent me a CD with three New Power Soul songs on it, and here's a truly great one with a message that is still pertinent today, and is guaranteed to get your butt moving, or your money back!!

Guaranteed!!!

CONGO BONGO - "Theme For A Last Home Movie" (2022)

John Sanders of Crash-N-Burn, New Power Soul, and Zazerac has just finished another Congo Bongo song, and was kind enough to keep me informed so I can tell you all about it before this year is over. The world's a pretty shitty place these days, so thank goodness there are still guys like John Sanders who can provide us with some good vibes to listen to.
Let's literally end this year on a good note!
